My Students
Our school serves a diverse community of wonderful people. Individual classes look like smaller versions of our entire student body because we don't schedule students into rigid learning tracks. Because of this, students learn from and work with peers that are different than themselves. Our school is a place where faculty and staff advocate for students and each other. I love the sense of belonging and community at our school.
Everyone in our building is a learner, and everyone is a teacher.
We are a racially and socioeconomically diverse school serving over 400 inner-city students in the 7th and 8th grades. Most (76%) of our students are multi-language learners spread across 16 different languages. Our school population consists of 84% low-income students, 9% homeless, and 27% special education students. Eighty-five percent of our students function with risk factors that include poverty, homelessness, single-parent families, domestic violence, gangs, learning disabilities, and being a racial minority.
My Project
Our school needs a cozy and calming space for students to take a breath and reset. Items that will help create this environment include salt lamps, kinetic sand, mindfulness cards, stress relief, puzzles, and other tactile sensory items.
Everyone has felt overwhelmed during the pandemic and having a safe respite in school will benefit students emotionally and academically.
Evidence suggests that these calming spaces help reduce anxiety and depression, especially in student populations like ours. The selected items can easily be sanitized and will create just the perfect atmosphere for our students. Thank you for your help in supporting our amazing kids.
