it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am teaching, and schools in my area serve communities in need. The school offers something to eat in the early morning which many kids miss it. I saw many kids eating before our class started but I never thought what this might mean.
One day, one student asked me for food during class; she was hungry,
I had never seen her face like that, and when I asked her about breakfast, I noticed most of the kids were not eating anything until lunchtime nor did they have dinner. They are coming to school to eat.
Some kids bring something to eat before class starts. I noticed if students forget their breakfast at home, or if there is nothing at home, they have no money to buy anything to eat. There were snacks that they sold for $0.50, still, kids had no money to buy them.
That was a wake-up moment, these kids are hungry and I am urging them to stay focused! These days food is expensive and most kids do not eat at home before school. When they arrive late, there is nothing to eat until lunch.
I decided to keep some food in my classroom and give it to hungry kids. Actually, now I think the lack of breakfast is the reason for seeing some kids behaving differently.
This food will help my hungry students get the nutrition they need to focus on their tasks and motivate them to do their best. Most of the time I give them food as a reward to not have a negative impact on kids and I noticed it motivates them to do even better.
