My Students
Imagine 34 students vying for the only projector in the classroom. They are wonderful students who are willing to share, but you can understand their frustration. My goal is to get the line moving as quickly as possible, so getting extra projectors is a great start.
My art students are 10th and 11th graders, a bit like small fish in a huge sea.
We are a mini-school housed on the 3rd floor of an extremely large high school. The neighborhood is not the safest around, and this is a high-needs inner-city community, but our students feel safe in our little corner of the world.
My Project
My students love art class, and I do the best that I can with the supplies I have on hand. I have a tracer projector that I bought many years ago. It's the only one in the room. We are doing self-portraits drawn from photos.
Some students have the skills to draw directly onto canvas, but many of them don't, which is why the projector comes in handy. They don't mind sharing, but I heard one student say today, "Wouldn't it be great if we had another projector in the room, Miss? We could be working at the same time."
Since the students are working in pairs, they can help each other to make the process go smoother and faster. I love when the students can help each other and provide feedback. It builds teamwork and confidence. They can learn to work together.
The donations of the extra projectors will make a big difference in my classroom.
It will increase the productivity in class and create 'centers' of activity in the classroom, where several groups can work at the same time. Not only will my current classes benefit, but so will my future students. These projectors last a really long time if taken care of (the way I've taken care of the one we have now.)
