My Students

Our students come to school every day (with 98.4% attendance) in a diverse, low-income, urban community. They are 68% Asian, 14% African-American, 11% Latino, 6% Caucasian and 1% multiracial.

Our school community supports the whole student, academically, physically and emotionally.

By meeting the needs of our students on many levels, we help them to find success in school and in their community. It is a collective effort to help each of our students become the best people they can be. We try to create a foundation that they will take with them through their education and beyond.

My Project

As a 7th and 8th grade literacy teacher, I use a balanced approach to literacy. We read short pieces, novels, practice writing narratives and arguments, learn vocabulary both in word study and within texts. Differentiation and modification are keys to success in these classes of high performers, average learners, diverse and English language learners.

With Kindles and the Audible app, students who need support by listening to text will have the additional access to the text that will help them to find further success in class.

Diverse learners and English language learners will especially benefit by being able to read and listen to text simultaneously. This simple addition to the classroom will give all students extended opportunities for success.
