We are a great school with 500+ elementary students; all of whom come through my classroom twice a week. They love to learn and love to play and in music class, so I try to allow for both. The school itself is a wonderful place that allows students to learn in a safe and kind environment. I am very proud of our school for being innovative, and our principal supports teachers thinking outside the box. Teachers are always looking to find ways to create excitement and curiosity in their students, and I am no different in that regard.
My Project
Digging through my closet I found an old steel drum. This started me on thinking how I could use this to teach my students about Caribbean music and how to play the steel drum. My students have been working a lot this year on how to read notes on the staff and translate it to instruments and I think this would be a great way to expand on that! I was able to get 2 more and almost have enough now for students to use in our 4 student rotation centers.
Playing the steel drum is a unique opportunity that I would love to give to my students!
We use centers a lot in my classroom so that students can get more individualized one on one time with different instruments and educational games. I would like to have a center for steel drums so students can have time to go through and be able to figure out how to play songs on them.
