Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the opportunity to work and make music with over one hundred wonderful young people. The students work hard learning to play music in group and individual settings. The amount of growth that the students show from the beginning to the end of their time at the school is astonishing.
We have one of the highest levels of unemployment in the United States at 34.5%.
People who are lucky enough to have a job often live at or below the poverty rate. Despite these hardships, I have personally witnessed the effect the arts can have on young people. I had one student in particular who lived in a hard situation. She lived in a mobile home with six other people. She had seen more than her fair share of hardships but you would never know that hearing her play the flute. The arts can truly emancipate people from their hardships: each and every young person is equally capable of making a meaningful impact on society if they have the opportunity. My school has over nine hundred eager young people. I have had the privilege of being lucky enough to have these students exceed my expectations time and time again.
My Project
Every year the students in the band program get to learn a variety of exciting music. Unfortunately, the music we play is very much limited by the supplies we have. This equipment represents new opportunities for my students to explore music and advance as musicians.
The band room is a safe and healthy place for young people to be expressive.
My students know and appreciate what it is to experience generosity. This equipment will be well-maintained and will last for years to come. We have a variety of exciting new places and plan this year that feature these instruments. This will put an extra layer of shine on top of their efforts which will add to an already outstanding experience.
