My Students

My students challenge me everyday to be better for them. I am always looking for new ways to keep them focused on their hopes and dreams for the future and teach them the skills they need to be lifelong learners for success in life. They constantly ask questions to dig deeper and absorb as much new information as they can in order to generate their own ideas and thinking about the world around them.

Every day, my students are developing their collaboration skills as they discover the ins and outs of working as a team at our highly diverse Title 1 school.

They are in their final year of elementary school and are serving as the role models for the rest of the student body at our school. My students work together to set goals and become confident in who they are so that they are comfortable asking for help and supporting each other as they move onto middle school in the fall.

My Project

As a Notre Dame Trustey Family STEM Teaching Fellow, I have been learning ways to incorporate practices to help my students become deeper thinkers and problem solvers. We have been using the Engineering Design Process to research problems, brainstorm strategies to tackle these problems and then test and redesign our solutions.

I have introduced TinkerCAD to my students, but with a 3D printer, they can bring solutions to life.

One way students work to solve problems around them is during Genius Hour. Students work on an independent research projects focused on a problem they feel passionate about solving. As they learn all they can about an interesting topic and then design a presentation or activity to share their new expertise with their classmates. Some past projects include developing a better wheelchair for a classmate, finding ways to end bullying, and learning to code.
