My students need a class set of algebra tiles to provide them with a visual way of learning important skills like solving equations and factoring polynomial expressions.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My algebra support students come from diverse backgrounds and have varying skill sets. It is essential for them to have a strong foundation in Algebra in order to be successful in subsequent math classes. Many of them have always struggled with math and need a fresh approach to traditional topics.
My students are amazing and inspiring people!
Many of them are first- or second-generation immigrants and come from families that are economically disadvantaged. They aspire to be the first in their families to not only graduate from high school, but also from college. They are with me for an additional class period each day to reinforce concepts that they learn in their College Prep Algebra class, and also to strengthen basic skills such as operations with fractions and signed numbers. Their enthusiasm and determination to work hard every single day motivates me to continue finding innovative ways to meet their needs.
My Project
When students come from such diverse backgrounds with very different skill sets it is critical to meet the needs of every student. These students have historically struggled in traditional math classes so it is important to present algebra content in numerous ways that will better support their learning needs.
Solving equations is one of the most important algebra skills students learn. Many students learn to solve equations by rote, but algebra Tiles will give them a visual interpretation of the steps and also them give a deeper understanding of what they are doing. Solving equations is a concept that is embedded in our curriculum so they will be able to use the tiles throughout the entire year.
A second critical topic that many Algebra students struggle with is factoring polynomials. Algebra tiles will allow them to take a complex problem and break it down visually. The understanding that they will gain from seeing a trinomial broken into binomials will be invaluable!
Algebra tiles will make solving equations and factoring polynomials more accessible and fun for students who rarely have the opportunity to do hands-on activities in math class.
They will give students a much deeper and broader understanding of these concepts which will contribute to their retention of these important skills!
