Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is very diverse. It is made up of two grade levels, diverse learners, and English language learners. When you walk into my room, you will witness what differentiated instruction looks like.Students are working on skills that target their grade levels, their learning plans, their communication abilities, and even their specific interests.

Imagine coming to school and being given a diverse set of tools and resources specific to your needs. It is an amazing space to be in and these are the opportunities I try to provide students with every day.I work in a school with a very high low-income student population in Chicago, Illinois. Many of my students have very limited resources in their own homes and are in constant need of ways to compensate for the things that they lack at home.

Like all students living in the United States, my students hold the American dream of success but they just need access to the tools that bridge this possibility.

My Project

In math class, my students use personal boards to write out their thinking while solving word problems. These personal boards are made using sheet protectors and are written on using dry erase markers. These student-made personal boards are better than bulky whiteboards because they fit in students' folders and can be used to protect sheets displaying critical math tools and examples.Their ideas and math thinking is then shared with the rest of the class using chart paper.

These math supplies are needed in order to help support the efforts to learn math in my classroom.

If you walk into my room during math class, students are working collaboratively with their personal boards and markers-using these to communicate their thinking effectively. If you walk around my classroom, you'll notice that the walls are lined with posters displaying students' mathematical thinking and reasoning on large sheets of chart paper for others to see and understand.Helping support this project will ensure that our basic math needs are taken care of for years to come.
