About My Students

Our school has a student body of close to 3,000 students, representing a wide range of cultural identities and socioeconomic backgrounds. This year over half of our students are from low-income families, qualifying for free or reduced school lunch and 78 of our students are classified as homeless according to the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.

Bailey, Cammeron, and Natalie are officers in our Business and Marketing Club, representing both FBLA and DECA. For their community service project, these kids created the "Soles 4 Souls" campaign, seeking funds to provide Converse shoes to students in need. They specifically chose Converse shoes to avoid any stigma associated with being a student in need. They created a logo, a banner, and a marketing campaign at our school designed to not only raise funds for shoes, but also to inform students about the issue. This project represents a large effort towards expanding their non-profit experience into both social media and crowdfunding.

The academic goal of their project is to create a nonprofit enterprise serving their own student population. "Soles 4 Souls" aims to level the playing field by giving our homeless population resources they wouldn't otherwise have access to. These kids have learned from both their successes and failures in fundraising and have developed an empathetic, yet practical, approach to the very real financial insecurity that surrounds them in their own high school.

In Their Own Words

Our goal is to provide basic Converse shoes for our students in need. There is a stigma attached to poverty. A kid who cannot afford shoes, school supplies, or even warm clothing is easily identified in our classes. We want to eliminate this. Converse are part of an unofficial "dress code" in our school and, simply put, students who are financially insecure can't afford them. We want to provide these shoes to give our classmates the sense of belonging they may otherwise lack.

We hope to be leaders not only in our school but also our community. By reaching out to friends, family and students of our high school, we can create a sense of unity within our boundaries. With this project, we hope to further reinforce our school's theme: We are One.

The shoes collected bought by this project will be kept in our closet, a place where low-income students can get food, clothes, coats, and now shoes. Our closet is open to any student in need and is used constantly by high school students and parents equally. The items in the closet are free and provided 100% by donations like these.
