Help me give my students the choice of reading the novel Sold by Patricia Mccormick during our social justice unit.

My Students

My students, 10th, 11th and 12th graders, attend a public high school, and the majority of students, approximately 50%, live in poverty. We are a small school of less than 600 and approximately 60% of the students are open enrollment, leading to less funding from the state.

We have a diverse population of students, as many students from the big city seek our school for greater opportunities.

When given the right tools, my students are excited to learn and grow. They are amazing! They are the future.

My Project

During our unit on social justice, students are asked to choose a novel to read as a literary group. Adding this title to our classroom choices will give the students more options. We currently have three titles they can choose from and Sold would be an excellent addition to the choices.

By providing students with a variety of reading choices, it ensures that students will study a text they are interested in; therefore, making the learning process more interesting and effective.

Students who choose this text will learn about a social justice issue that currently plagues our world while actively participating in a literature circle style discussions in order to engage in rigorous and relevant conversation about their reading.
