Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As an ESL Facilitator, I have the privilege of working with about 100 ESL students grades K-6. The majority of these students are Hispanic and their parents work in the fields or factories. While they quickly pick up the conversational language with their friends, the academic language takes much more effort to learn. Therefore, last year we began a successful math club students previewed/reviewed the vocabulary and main ideas of their math teacher would cover in that day's lesson.

In order to further motivate the students and teach them that hard work pays off, we set up a Math Club Economy where students could earn up to 5 cents a day based on the effort they demonstrated. Our problem - our student's are putting forth so much effort that we've run out of money!

Simply stated, we need more money - but just the plastic kind so that our students can continue to save/buy prizes at the school store and learn that hard work does pay off. A major concept we cover during the Math club is fractions. This concept is covered grades 2-6, yet without having a visual, ESL students have a difficult time understanding what the difference is between 1/2 and 1/3. We also encourage students to take these skills home to play math games with their families instead of sitting in front of video games. In order to do this, we want to provide 2 dice for each student. With those little dots poking up at them, they can't help but want to count, add, and multiply them!

My hope is that through the Math club and "Company Store" experience, our ESL students will not sell their soul, yet find the freedom that comes through learning how to manage and save the money they earn through putting forth hard work and thus become productive members of our society.
