Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Gardening is such a wonderful challenge. Getting children to take ownership of a school garden is step one in getting them to take ownership of our Earth. Many are reluctant to start, but they all begin to think about their impact. You can see it on their faces. Let's take it a step further.

We are a public elementary school in an urban neighborhood.

Many of our kids are low income, at-risk students. I usually only work with 5th grade students, but our garden project has actually moved into the realm of a school-wide project. In the coming months, we will begin to use our garden to train kids, down to the second grade, in 4-H's Jr. Master Gardener program. Interest in Science has never been greater in our school.

My Project

This project is designed to teach students about different methods for maintaining a garden, while also teaching kids about alternative energy. This project will provide our garden with a solar powered pump for our drip irrigation system. This will show students how to prevent the water waste which occurs in a traditional sprinkler system, while providing a level of sustainability for future teachers and classes. We are attempting to FEED USA by providing children with hands-on experience with healthier foods, and hopefully we teach a lesson in conservation and alternative energy while we are at it.

The learning that can be done in a school garden is unparalleled in a traditional classroom.

It is up to us to maximize the learning and the experience to be had. A solar powered pump will make students reflect upon the factors that affect both food production and the overall health of our Earth. Not only will our children harvest food from our garden, but water from the sky and energy from the sun as well. Help us grow our garden!
