Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are energetic and civically engaged 6th graders. Ethnically our school is about 55% Latino, 20% African-American, 10% Asian, and 5% White. About 50% of my students are English Language Learners of varying abilities, and the rest are native English speakers. They attend a Title I, inner-city school in a community-oriented neighborhood. My students and their families enjoy participating in school-sponsored events including craft night and our student-run multicultural fair.

My students desire to be challenged academically and to grow as critical thinkers.

In spite of the economic disparities and other difficulties my students face, I believe that they can all achieve greatness.

My Project

Typically every spring our 6th graders partake in our annual solar car race. Students are provided one solar panel and work in teams to construct their cars from scratch. Though learning at home, I want my 6th grade class to experience a virtual version of this spring event and also ensure that all students have equal access to the required materials and tools.

Through the use of solar car kits, my students will have hands-on science and engineering experiences, while also using critical thinking and problem solving skills to make adjustments to their solar cars.

With the help of these kits my students will learn about solar energy and see it in action. They will also engage in friendly competition with their classmates and cheer for one another, which helps boost self-esteem and build their social-emotional skill set.
