My students need light shades to promote a multi-sensory-friendly learning environment!

I believe every child deserves the opportunity for an excellent education, and I am proud to partner with my school, other educators, families and community leaders to strive toward this goal. I teach in a high poverty school zone in which 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. These amazing students need additional support because most of them come from low-income single family households of which many have little to no support or resources. Despite some of the challenges they face in and around their environment, every year my students come to school excited, full of life and eager to learn.
As a member of the AmeriCorps program, I set out to make our people safer, stronger and healthier; to strengthen our communities; and to get things done for America.
As a member of Metro Atlanta Teach for America, I have been positioned to significantly impact the life trajectories of students in our region’s high-need communities.
By using flame-retardant fabric light shades to cover light fixtures, industrial fluorescent lighting can be muted to produce a softer, more calming light that is conducive to learning in a peaceful environment.
Research has shown that harsh fluorescent lighting can be agitating and overstimulating to learners.
These shades are specially manufactured and fitted with magnets to perfectly cover fluorescent light fixtures in classrooms. We currently have four light shades in one corner of our room, but we have noticed the difference it makes and would like to utilize them all over the classroom. Thank you in advance for considering funding our project!
