Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are enthusiastic and passionate about learning. We love project based learning and design thinking. We are also very collaborative and enjoy working together. This year we are focusing on choosing kindness when we interact with each other and on having growth mindsets when we encounter obstacles in our learning.
Our school and classroom represent a diverse community of learners.
We have fourteen percent of our school on free or reduced price lunch and twenty-two percent of our school has limited English. We have many different languages and cultures represented on our campus which allows us to grow and learn from one another.
My Project
Our school has an early start time of 7:45 AM. WOW! Some mornings, even I feel as though my brain is not quite ready that early! This year, we have started our mornings with "soft starts," which is quiet time to focus on choice activities and help our brains get ready for the day. Students have been choosing to play logic or brain games, complete puzzles, color, read, or create using Playdoh or other manipulatives.
My wish is that my students would enter my classroom, after perhaps a stressful morning of trying to get to school on time, and have their stress float away during "soft start" allowing them to prepare their mind for more rigorous instruction later on in the day.
