My Students

I have a wonderful group of 5th grade students who are ambitious and full of creative ideas. These students come from an upper middle class neighborhood, with several coming from single parent homes or homes where both parents work full time.

These students are energetic and enjoy moving around the classroom, working collaboratively in partnerships, and they frequently engage their critical thinking skills.

They thrive on movement throughout the day inside and outside of the classroom to keep their brains refreshed.

My Project

"Soft Starts" offer a bridge between the whirlwind of arriving at school and the social, mental, and academic demands of the day. They give students the opportunity to transition to a school environment and build community with their peers. "Soft Starts" allow students to work together in small groups on things that they enjoy and allow time for collaboration and discussion about things that they may have in common.

The items that I am requesting for my classroom include a variety of STEM materials, including interlocking building blocks, math games, jig saw puzzles, and logic puzzles.

These materials are the supplies my students need to get their creative juices flowing first thing in the morning. If students prefer to work individually or in a small group, "Soft Starts" get them thinking outside of the box bright and early.
