My Students
I’m a speech therapist at a Title I school in an urban area. I’ve been at the same school for over 25 years and serve over 50 children. Even though my job gets more challenging every year due to my students’ needs continuing to increase, I stay because of all the amazing kids I get to work with.
Even though a large portion of my children can’t speak and have significant physical and medical concerns, every one of them perseveres to find a way to communicate, even if it’s a facial expression or giggle.
They challenge and encourage me every day. But mostly, they make me smile every day, in person and virtually!
My Project
This "Back to School" is more exciting than ever! The transition back into the building for 5 days a week will be fun but also challenging! Students are used to the freedom to move around their learning environment due to distance learning. We want to make this possible as the students come back to classrooms full time, giving them more options than traditional seating.
There is a huge difference in our students' behavior and focus when they are given a choice in their seating.
Flexible, pillow seats allow students to learn in a comfortable area so they can wiggle and move without disrupting others. My students with speech and language impairments learn the best through authentic activities, such as facilitative play. These floor pillows will help my students by allowing them to choose the kind of seating that works best for them and encourage language development through play.
