This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are loving and eager to learn. They display tremendous resilience every day. My students come from Red Hook, Brooklyn and many of them have already experienced trauma and extremely difficult life circumstances.
Despite the challenges, they are excited to read books with important life lessons and a focus on socioemotional learning.
As the crisis specialist in my school, I would love to do Pre-K-5th grade reading groups centered around topics like empathy, resilience, respect, integrity, and curiosity. I would also like to like to provide students with stories with which they can relate.
My Project
These books will simultaneously enhance the reading skills and socioemotional skills of my students. It was also allow them to find books they can relate to; they will be able to see themselves in the characters they are reading about. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind. Students will be able to choose books which will help them to enjoy reading in groups and independently.
The best way to create a love for reading is to engage students in books with characters with whom they can relate.
The books in this project will help students to be engaged in reading and to learn with peers in a book group. It will also build their social and emotional skills and important values such as respect, empathy, resilience, curiosity, and integrity.
