This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach P.E. to 6th graders in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. More than 80% of our school's students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch at our Title I school. The majority of our school time and funds are dedicated to academics.

But when it's time for PE, our sixth graders are ready to let loose and play all kinds of active games.

Unlike computer games, P.E. is live-action with hands-on experience as students' feet race to catch, throw, kick, trap, and dribble.

My Project

The ultimate, no-hands, pandemic activity is Chuck-It-Arms. Students use a throwing stick to launch a ball then pick it up with a scoop on the end without ever touching the ball with their hands. Each student only touches their own throwing stick and not the ball. Then the individual throwing arms are easily sanitized for the next P.E. class. I previously received Chuck-It-Arms from another fully funded project. I used them with a class and the students LOVED it! These additional Chuck-Its will supply enough arms and balls so every 6th-grade student can be safe and active while improving their throwing skills.

Keeping students safe and active is my first priority as a PE teacher.

It might seem crazy, but aiming then throwing a basketball at a blowup target is wildly fun and improves accuracy because students are motivated to see the ninja dude tip over. It also is a safe activity during a pandemic because students only touch their individual basketball.

One red cone is needed to replace a lost cone so students have an easier time remaining socially distanced. Finally, badminton replacement nets (our previous nets broke) would be strategically placed then used for small group "no hands" paddle ball.

Who knew with the help of DonorsChoose.org and creative thinking, 6th graders can still be active and safe during P.E. class?
