My Students

Our school is a dual language school dedicated to bridging the Deaf and Hearing communities in New York City. Our Pre-K-8th-grade students come from every borough of New York City. The majority are Children of Deaf Adults (CODAs), whose first language is American Sign Language. Our school offers the least restrictive environment for Deaf students in the New York City Department of Education.

My students are like my children to me.

I have been with them for three years now and will have them again for the 2020-2021 school year. It is the longest time I have spent with one class in my fourteen-year career, so, naturally, we have grown quite close. Over the past three years, I have seen them mature into hard-working, responsible young adults and I can honestly say that I have learned a great deal from this spunky bunch.

My Project

Every year, I store my students’ notebooks and workbooks in the classroom by their table groups. Usually, four students’ belongings will go into each bin. This year, with COVID-19, we have to store our items separately to keep our students safe. This means I will need four times the amount of bins this year. Usually, I use the money our district gives teachers to purchase notebooks, pencils, folders, etc. That money was cut from our budget this year; so, I had to purchase those items myself. Your donation would help enable me to provide my students their own place to safely store their materials.
