This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a high poverty school where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
My students are thoughtful and enthusiastic learners.
They come to class each day eager to see their school family and tackle academic challenges. I am constantly amazed by their ingenuity and desire to be better than they were yesterday.
In my classroom, we focus on becoming learners, not just learning material. Hopefully, the skills they acquire are ones that will benefit them throughout their academic journey.
My Project
One of my favorite parts of my classroom is my library. Students LOVE being able to access a wide variety of books. The look on their faces when I tell them, "Yes, you can borrow a book. I trust you'll take care of it" is priceless. You can imagine my heartbreak when I realized access to my classroom library will be limited while following social distancing guidelines.
If my students had personal bags to store their borrowed books in, they would still be able to explore our classroom library.
They would be able to select a few books at a time to read at their leisure. When they are finished I will hold them in isolation for the recommended time before allowing another student to "check them out". The bags would, of course, need to be labeled with the fabric labels. I would use the label maker to label each book with my school address.
I hope to be able to provide these resources to my students. It will help provide a bit of normalcy when we return to face-to-face learned in a few weeks.
