Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The school setting is so much more than an academic setting. For many students at my school, coming to school is the environment where they have the majority of their face to face social interactions with peers and adults.
Since many of my students have limited social interactions outside of the school environment, some students require being taught social thinking skills.
Social thinking is what individuals do when interacting with other people: namely, they think about them. Most people take social thinking for granted, as it is generally an intuitive process that considers the points of view, emotions, and intentions of others. While these challenges are commonly experienced by individuals with autism spectrum disorders (high-functioning), social communication disorder, Asperger's, ADHD, nonverbal learning disability and similar diagnoses, children and adults experiencing social learning difficulties often have received no diagnosis. Those with ASD and related social learning challenges who are “higher functioning” need direct instruction on how to think socially and understand the use of related social skills although all students can benefit from learning social thinking skills.
My Project
The materials requested will be used with first, third, and fourth grade students for in-depth interventions in groups or individual counseling who need to build on or construct social thinking skills.
Using the Superflex curriculum, which teaches social thinking through the super hero Superflex, and other resources from the Social Thinking.com my students will become their own social thinking super heroes.
My students have loved learning about SuperFlex and the strategies he has used to defeat the Unthinkables that can takeover one's brain and make them appear awkward which can impact relationships or distracted which can impair someone to be available for learning.
