My Students

About a third of the students in our class were seriously impacted by the storm. Many live in public housing buildings where the power and water were shut off for over a week. The kids returned with stories of their cars being destroyed by flood waters, freezing nights without heat, and relatives hauling water up many flights of stairs so they could drink and bathe. It will be a while still before things go back to normal. Hands-on projects help to bring history alive for elementary students. Unfortunately, when no public school funds are allotted for art supplies, the entire burden of paying for these supplies falls on teachers.

Social studies class doesn't have to mean students reading from text books.

History doesn't have to be far out of our students' reach. Rather, history can be taught in a way that comes alive for our students. In our school, we do this through amazing social studies field trips, as well as historical role plays and art projects. Our school is a public school, but it is one that practices these sort of progressive teaching and learning strategies. My students are 4th graders. We live in a city in New York State. My students are very diverse, ethnically, racially and socioeconomically. This year, our social studies curriculum will focus on the Lenape tribe, who lived on Manhattan Island prior to European colonization. When I started teaching, I was really surprised to learn that there are not many children's books or adult books about this tribe, especially in comparison to the amount of books about larger tribes like the Iroquois.

My Project

One great source that we do have is the book The Indians of New Jersey, by M.R. Harrington. The reason this book is so great is that Harrington did meticulous research to help make his historical fiction novel rich and detailed, and he also created realistic characters who defy one-dimensional stereotypes of natives. The main character in this book is a British child who washes ashore on the New Jersey coast after a shipwreck. The book is the story of this boy becoming a member of the tribe, and learning their customs. The last time we read this book, my class did crafts based on each aspect of the culture that the main character learned about. For example, when we read the part of the book in which Dickon learned to make pots, we made clay pots, and so on. I am requesting clay in order to make Lenape style clay pots. In addition, I am requesting felt, awls and needles in order for every student to make a pair of moccasins. I am also requesting beads for weaving wampum belts.

I cannot tell you how exciting this was for the children, and how much it allowed them to gain a richer understanding of Lenape life.

Also, these projects are very much accessible to children with different learning abilities. I would greatly appreciate your help in allowing this year's class to have the same great experiences as the children who preceded them!
