I am a second grade teacher at Richlands Primary School in rural North Carolina. Our school receives Title One Funding. We also have an increasing number of students whose primary language is not English (mostly Spanish). Most of our students come from low- to middle-income families. Teaching our students about diversity, traditions, and communities (past and present) is an important part of our curriculum. Because we use a Balanced Literacy approach, we do not have Social Studies books. Rather, we try to incorporate a variety of fiction and nonfiction literature, trade books, big books, and various activities to provide rich learning experiences for our students. The Native American Resource Box will benefit the students in many ways: --- Students will engage in hands on Social Studies. --- Students will have a visual and tactile sense of authentic items important to the lives of Native Americans. --- Students will be able to increase their background knowledge, which is important to their understanding of Native American communities. --- Students will be able to make connections and compare/contrast their communities with those of the past. --- Reading, Writing, and Social Studies will be integrated. Providing authentic Native American items that these young students can manipulate will greatly increase student interest and learning. Thank you very much for helping Social Studies come alive for our students!
