My special education inclusion preschool classroom is designed to be an inclusive setting for both special needs students and typically developing preschoolers to receive a quality education while also getting services to meet their IEP goals. My students are working on things like participation, interacting with others, language skills, compassion, friendship, and much more.
Compassion and understanding for others is an important skill that all children need to learn to be successful.
I use social stories in my classroom to help teach my students how to respond, react and prepare for social situations. Social cues and situations can be difficult for students with special needs, and social stories can be very helpful. Social stories are great for students with special needs and preschoolers because they are colorful, engaging, and use kid friendly language that is easy for them to understand. I like to purchase social story bundles of Teachers Pay Teachers with various topics and print and laminate them and make them into books to read to my students and for them to look at. We review these in whole group and small group lessons.
It is important to help teach students to be compassionate and caring toward others and treat everyone with kindness and respect. By giving my students more social stories, they will be able to learn skills to help them see the world through their peers eyes. Social stories can also help teach my students empathy and to appropriately respond in social situations, which can help them know how to work toward helping their peers to feel better when they are down.
I will be able to see that my students are understanding and applying compassion by the way that my students interact more appropriately with each other and be more kind and compassionate with each other.
