My students need engaging books to support social skill lessons. These books discuss making friends, perspective taking, how to handle bullying, manners, and making smart choices.

My Students
I teach a special education class in a low income neighborhood. I have 12 incredibly talented and bright children with special needs. I teach a group of students with Autism, who continue to warm my heart on a daily basis. Some of my students spend time in a general education setting as often as they can to interact with typical peers.
The main goal for each of my students is to teach them the necessary coping and social skills to help them function in society in a way that is most successful for each individual student.
We start each day with positive thoughts about ourselves and review strategies to use throughout the day. Sensory needs and coping mechanisms are met by utilizing different tools in the classroom, such as wiggle seats, exercise balls, weighted pads etc.
I would also love to have more social skills books for my students to use with our lessons. This would allow students to find the hidden meanings and look at situations from a different perspective. My students benefit from visuals and hands on work, which is why these books and materials would be very beneficial to them.
My Project
These materials will support their social skills learning and social needs in a great way. My students learn best with visuals and hands-on lessons/activities. The books and games will be materials they can use when they need a break from the every day pencil and paper work.
These social skills books will support their learning in a more engaging and exciting way, and provide real life examples that they can connect to.
The books hit on many topics such as, making friends, manners, handling bullies, being honest, taking responsibility, and understanding others' perspectives. The books will be used as a way to support social skills lessons that already occur. These are all so essential to their lives. The games will help support academic learning and the bands will support sensory needs.
