My Students

Kindergarten is special time. For most children, it is their first school experience. That is the case with the majority of my sweet, kind-hearted kindergarten class. They came to school nervous and excited to learn and grow. For some it took great courage to leave their trusting family member and go with a new teacher not knowing what to expect. Others went into the school building with great confidence. As a class, we have established are rules and routines. We have read together, sang together and laughed together. We are learning to share, problem solve and work together; qualities that are the building blocks to productive and thriving citizens. My students are socially and emotionally growing as humans at the same time they are learning academically. In this short year, they will meet new friends, learn the alphabet, alphabet sounds and how to read. They will become mathematicians, scientists and responsible citizens. Our classroom is a place where new discoveries are made often and squeals of excitement happen daily.

My Project

Kindergarten is a place where imaginations run wild! It is a time when children are entering school for the first time. They are expected to learn their alphabet, letter sounds and become emergent readers. In my classroom I value student choice and empowerment. I encourage an atmosphere where students have the opportunity to practice skills independently that may have been introduced through direct instruction first. The Big Book wipe & write will serve many different purposes. It is a big book stand where students can independently re-read texts. It is an area where they can practice sight words or build words with magnetic letters. (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.1,CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.1.A, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.1.B ,CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.1.C, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.1.D)

Many of our students have not had the opportunity to socially engage with their peers during the pandemic.

Young children love puppets and books. Our state standards require students to participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics. (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.K.1.A) The puppets intended to be used by students to build these social skills intentionally.

Puppets allow students a safe space and opportunity to retell stories or interact with their peers around a variety of topics. They can practice listen to each other and taking turns. (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.K.1.B) These are life skills that we are laying the foundation for in Kindergarten.
