Social Skills & Life Skills for Special Needs Students

My students need a bidet sprayer attachment, toilet game, board games, side walk chalk, and other small water toys to address social skills, life skills, and behavior issues.

My Students

My students all have a moderate to severe intellectual disability. Their future isn't career or college based. Their future is life skills and independent living skills based. We work daily on academics, career skills, and independent living/life skills.

The most important topic is their independence and ability to care for themselves.

They do not know how to clean, cook, handle hygiene, or wash clothing. These are all skills that many of us take for granted. These essential life skills are a focal for my students. They need to learn how to complete simple things like changing their clothing after an accident, washing their dirty clothing, making their own drink, making a simple food item or meal, and self-care things like brushing teeth and flossing.

My Project

My students will be using the resources from this project to work on various social skills, life skills, and also to address some behavioral issues. Overall, my students lack social skills and have no idea how to play with one another. They are use to playing on tablets or on video games and don't really sit down and interact with their peers. The board games will help to address some of their social skill deficits and provide them games that are appropriate for their ability levels.

Some of my students also have behavior issues related to their disability.

A couple of my students with autism have a strong obsession with water and/or toilet flushing. Their obsession interferes with their ability to use the bathroom appropriately and when you couple that with their lack of essential life skills, we have disasters! We have had plumbing issues from flushing things down the toilet, overflown toilets in the class bathroom, and water all over the bathroom floor from playing in the sink. The toilet board game is hopefully going to help alleviate and satiate some of the obsession with the toilet. This will allow the students to play with water and a toilet in a more appropriate way and also gain some social skills. The bidet sprayer will also be for these students, as they lack some essential life skills like being able to wipe independently. We hope that learning to use the bidet will help them to more effectively clean themselves and do so independently.

The small tornado water toy and other watery toys/fidget devices are also for my students with autism. I'm hoping that having those things to manipulate and play with when they have an impulsive urge to flush or water play will satiate them!
