My Students

I am a English Language teacher for 6th, 7th and 8th grade. I have been teaching for the last 10 years, and this year is unlike any

other.

Time flies when you're having fun! Despite all the change over the past two years, It's safe to say that both the kids and I still have a great time learning in the classroom! I teach at a Title I school, which means that sometimes my kids & their families can't afford the basic necessities. My students live in a variety of housing situations, from a motel room, sharing a house with other families, and sometimes, living in a foster situation. This year has been particularly challenging, given the COVID crisis in our district. I have students who demonstrate a range of abilities and it has been a challenge to meet all their various needs. My students have a range of disabilities, such as dyslexia/learning disabilities, behavior disorders or mental health disorders. The ongoing crisis has lead me to start integrating more social and emotional practices into my classroom, in a response to my student's needs.

My Project

My students need daily social skills instruction in order to be successful in their classes and in their personal lives. The pandemic has negatively impacted the growth of their social skills and in the upcoming school year, both academic and social skill remediation will occur. I will integrate social skills instruction & games throughout my ELA classes. Social and Emotional Learning Standards that will be addressed in my classroom are demonstrating knowledge of one’s emotions (self-awareness 1A), the ability to manage emotions (Self-Management 2A), and demonstrating an awareness of other people's emotions and perspectives (social awareness 3A). Sanitizing wipes will be used throughout the school year to provide clean surfaces & clean games for social skills growth. I provide a comfortable atmosphere for my learners by having Christmas lights throughout my classroom.

Students will use the social skills games throughout the school year in order to practice the skills they learn through direct instruction.
