This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are wonderful children who really want to learn and also improve not just who they are, but also the school and their community. Most are from tough backgrounds, and some are homeless, or are in foster care.
Despite all these odds, once you get to know them and build rapport, they are incredibly loving, fun and hilarious!
We laugh a lot and look forward to our time together. They are very motivated to improve, but need special tools that are not necessarily part of the general curriculum or readily available within the public school budget.

My Project
My students really suffer from lack of tools in the social-emotional learning department. There is a lot of violence and parent/family absenteeism, and the students do not get the chance to learn how to cope with their feelings very well. Instead, they tend to have outbursts (I had a student just today who was pounding the wall, shouting swear words, and throwing objects, unable to express verbally that she was frustrated). Unfortunately, this is a school wide issue. I am hoping that the Kimochis and Max and Millie dolls will aid me in helping the students learn about coping with emotions and feelings in a way that is healthy for all in the school, and will also have a long term lasting impact in their lives.
