Teaching children with special needs is truly amazing! I have the privilege of teaching children with profound learning disabilities from kindergarten to 6th grade. I go to my class every day looking forward to seeing their smiles and helping them achieve their goals.
My Project
After a long time away, returning to school can be a challenge in many ways for students. Reconnecting with peers can be the most challenging part of returning, especially if they have a disability that hinders their social skills like my students do.
I am requesting games, sensory items and decorations which will help students feel welcomed back to school and create ways to help my students reconnect and build social skills.
With these resources my students will practice turn-taking, working with peers, personal space, positive responses, good sportsmanship, and making and responding to bids for interaction.
Reconnecting with peers may be the most important part of returning to school for these students. Many skills can be learned at home but it is nearly impossible to recreate peer interaction in a classroom.
