My Students

This is a kindergarten through second grade Autistic Support classroom in Philadelphia. As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of our classroom. These students are all diagnosed with Autism and have a wide range of needs and abilities. Some of my students are non-verbal and many are functioning under age and grade level. They also have a wide range of sensory and behavioral needs which require varied supports in order to help meet their individualized needs.

I am greeted every morning by these wonderful kids, all of them with a thirst for knowledge that inspires me to do everything I can to help them be their best.

Each day I take care of the needs of each student as they arise and this sometimes means I can't give my full attention to my entire class. They require substantial support in order to gain independence. These materials will help with developing their communication, social and emotional awareness, and academic skills. I have high expectations for my students that I know they will be able to meet if they are given the appropriate materials, instruction, and support.

My Project

An important part of my curriculum is implementing social skills lessons to teach and reinforce important social behaviors. Our students struggle with reading social cues, so social stories are used to teach particular skills, such as identifying important cues in a given situation; seeing another's point of view; understanding rules, routines, situations, upcoming events or abstract concepts; and understanding expectations. With these books, I can address many of the everyday social struggles that we face and teach social skills in an engaging, meaningful manner. Having hands-on books will be helpful to visually show my students social behaviors, as well as give them something to look back on when they need a social skill reminder.

Some of our classroom materials are outdated and in need of replacement.

We currently have read along books for our classroom listening center, but some are on cassette tape. Cassettes are difficult to use independently for my students, and create difficulty in following along with a book if they are not rewound properly, which can take time away from the listening center activity when students switch centers. Having read along stories on CD will help give my students the skills and confidence needed to become independent, successful readers.

The headphones will be used at the listening center and computers to access programs that help work on many different skills. We have used these headphones in the past and they have held up for multiple years, but it is time to replace ones no longer working correctly. The headphones are made from durable foam material and limit volume, which is perfect for this age group. Donations towards these materials for our classroom would make a big difference in helping children gain the skills needed to be successful in the world today, inside and outside of the classroom.
