Social Realism with Digital Photography

My students need three digital cameras, photo paper, a jump drive, a printer, poster board, pens, markers, scissors, glue sticks and the Adobe Photoshop program.

It is my goal as an educator to help give my students a voice. I want them to be able to communicate social concerns to others using the visual arts. Our society reacts and revolves around all things visual and the possibility of enabling students to be able to share his/her opinions about social problems that are relevant to them and our community is awesome. I teach in a high poverty, high special needs high school where over 70% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. While some students cannot express themselves as well as others using the written word students are on more equal footing when setting up a photograph to make a point about something that he/she finds important.

Being able to supply the students with digital camera's that they can check out and take into his/her own community would provide the students with the opportunity to share problems and/or concerns that are directly related to various communities. With a number of businesses closing their doors permanently and/or companies laying off a large number of personnel students are being affected by our economy on a personal level. My goal as an art educator is to get students to develop a pictorial essay targeting areas of our community that are in need of help. Hopefully we can set these up on my web site with links to local service agencies that can provide assistance for each type of problem.

The cameras, adobe, and the printer will allow us to scan, adapt, and change our photos in a way to make them stand out more. Whether that is adjusting the light source and/or removing or adding color to one particular section to add emphasis to the subject matter. The students would also have photo pens and markers to further enhance their photos as well as poster board to mount them. By allowing the students the opportunity to check out the cameras we would be allowing them to work in their own neighborhoods and thereby share problems/concerns that are directly related to them.

Your donation will give my students the chance to share their own voice about their concerns social and economical that directly relate to them. These photo essays will be published online as well as be put on display in local arenas. Teaching students the basics of photography and what it takes to make a good composition is a lesson that they can carry with them throughout their entire life. The opportunity to share their thoughts about our community and its problems and successes gives the students ownership in finding solutions and celebrating successes.
