Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a graduate from UCLA. There, I received a scholarship for writing a grant for social justice. I truly have a heart for children who are in the urban areas or areas of higher needs. I enjoy working at Cahuenga Elementary School in Koreatown because there are many races at our school. My classroom has students from Mexico, Ethiopia, Phillipines, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and other countries.
I currently teach 1st grade and have 23 students in my classroom. I am concerned because most of my students do not know about their classmates' heritage, much less their own. I would like to focus more on the locations of certain countries so that my students will know where their classmates are from. This will develop a well rounded education and hopefully allow students to learn empathy and understanding.
Tolerance is something that is lacking in our schools. Since I am teaching such a diverse class, I think that this project using maps and globes is a very useful tool for younger students who are more visual learners than auditory. Students will be able to use the wipeable maps over and over for learning about areas which we are studying. I am very excited to start the next school year with a healthy knowledge of our country as well as others.
It is unfortunate that as students become older, they say things which are not appropriate at school due to television stereotypes or simply because of what they heard on the playground. I truly believe that these lessons will empower the children with knowledge of others and their culture and the importance which each person holds.
Thank you.
