Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students consist of both sixth, seventh and eighth graders, many of whom lack the vocabulary and strategic skills needed to access text and become successful students and citizens of the world.

Both my classes consist of students whose reading levels spans from below sixth grade level to above ninth.

Just as each student's abilities differ, their love of reading and the types of texts they enjoy differ as well. Our school houses a large ELL/ESL population. as well as an Autistic Spectrum Disorder program, and many of the students in those programs are also in my class.

Our school is an inviting community of parents and teachers who strive to provide students with opportunities to showcase their artistic, musical, athletic, philanthropic and academic talents throughout the year. We provide multiple opportunities to strengthen our students' ties to the school and community by engaging staff, students and parents in events such as the Titan Challenge, Talent Show, Math and Literacy Nights.

My Project

Students throughout our school absolutely love my classroom library, which continues to be primarily funded through Donor's Choose. One student said my classroom looked like Borders! Each year I try to focus on a genre of books and build upon my collection.

This year we will be using these materials in class and at home to practice reading fluency through read-alouds, as well as to connect to the study of government and social justice in our Socia Studies classes.

In addition, students will be able to choose these texts independent reading both at school as well as home.
