We have a large group of struggling readers at our school. COVID-19 stopped in-person learning beginning on March 16, 2020. Since then, the majority of our students did not reach their reading goals as they did in previous years. As more students have struggled to read over the past year, they have needed an impetus for embracing the love of reading. These titles are highly appealing to our voracious and struggling readers and can be just what they need to want to return to or begin enjoying reading.
Our collection needs more diverse titles to help our struggling readers find that perfect book.
Although we have many voracious readers, we also have a significant number of reluctant readers. One way our reluctant readers become more enthusiastic readers is by word-of-mouth. Their classmates will recommend popular and much-loved titles to them. They pick up these titles and fall in love with reading.
These books are well-written, many award-winning, and will entice our students to want to read. One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching is hearing a student share with me that they used to hate to read until they read one of the books I recommended. I hope to continue to convert more students to the love of reading.
The majority of these titles are centered on the lives of people of color, different abilities, and challenging circumstances.
Our students need to experience these stories to increase their own empathy. They will get caught up in the lives of these young people and want to continue to read more.
