Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 31 voracious readers in a gifted & talented class in East Harlem. Most of my fifth grade students are reading on a sixth grade-level or higher. Therefore, I'm in need of higher-level books to use when they go into book clubs. We're not going to do just any old reading in our book clubs. Specifically, my class will be examining a variety of social issues, such as: divorce, racism, loss, saving our planet, friendship, sibling rivalry, illiteracy and more. However, in order to do this, I'm in need of multiple copies of the same text so that all six kids in each club can read the same books at the same time. But there's more... as a culminating project, my students will be taking some kind of action based on the reading they've done. For instance, the kids who study environmental issues might come up with a campaign for a recycling program in the East Harlem Community. The children who study illiteracy might donate their time reading aloud to younger children in order to build their fluency. So it's not just reading about social issues... it's doing something with the new-found knowledge they have that will make this a very powerful unit of study for my kids. Right now, my school's budget is tight, which is why I desperately need your help! Please consider funding this proposal so that I can launch this unit of study successfully in my classroom. Thank you, in advance, for your generosity!
