My Students

My 30 9th Grade ELA students are the best students. Of the 30, 7 of them are on IEPs and 4 of them are ELL students while the others are struggling with their reading and writing.

I am trying to build their confidence and improve their success and achievement around reading and writing which, in itself, can be a huge challenge for me as well as my students.

My class of 9th grade ELA students are not that fond of reading and/or writing, so I am trying my best to find something they will connect with, find some interest in, and engage with for our Argument Unit starting from the middle-ish of January. Because many of my students in this class are struggling readers and writers, finding materials/curriculum for them is a challenge, but I think I have done it this Unit!! Through the help of the Culture of Pedagogy and UHS, I have found a curriculum my students actually have an interest in, and they cannot wait to get started on.

My Project

Individualism and Choices: Students will benefit from these resources as they will be better able to understand how making choices in society can severely impact their future by exploring societal and legal issues while evaluating multiple viewpoints.

Students will be focusing on some very important "essential questions" around this unit some of which are: Does systemic racism exist today?

Can we value freedom if we haven’t fought for it? What is the relationship between male teens of color and the court system? What is our personal relationship with the court system? As teens?

The resources needed for this unit are a class set of 30 texts from the author Walter Dean Myers titled Monster. I would also love at least 3 Graphic Novels to help support my reluctant readers, and I would also like at least one audio CD to help support my students on IEPs with reading levels below the actual text.
