Social Injustice: How Can You Be the Answer?

Help me give my students an influential learning experience as we discuss the effects of social injustice with young adult literature. Students will have student choice for this unit, and the more books we have, the better!

My Students

My students are great teenagers who appreciate a quality education. They know when a teacher works hard for them, and they will return the efforts when the topic is engaging to them. They are not afraid to take on a challenge, and they love any moment they can get to laugh and have a good time. Even though my students are great, I still have to look for new ways to keep them engaged, and I hope that DonorsChoose will give me the opportunity to fund some new ideas that I have for them.

My Project

I have taught To Kill a Mockingbird for 14 years, and I have watched students struggle to read the book because of the length and have trouble getting through the cumbersome assignments that I assign. After attending a conference this year, I have a new approach that I want to use with my students next year.

This unit will bring relevancy and engagement to the classroom, and students can reflect on how they can be an advocate for change through kindness and self-respect.

While teaching this novel, students will still read To Kill a Mockingbird and focus on the effects of social injustice, but they will also have the opportunity to read young adult literature that focuses on social injustice as well.
