Each student was given a copy of the book so that independent reading could be administered. Also, this gave more time to discuss the novel. For example, students discussed the characterization of Walter and the conflicts that he faced. Students also identified significant quotes and completed dialectical journals to make connections. In addition to studying the novel, students analyzed poetry by the authors mentioned in the book. \r\n\r\nMuch of this could not have been accomplished alone in the classroom, so students needed a copy of their own to read outside of class. Your donation helped students accomplish a lot during this unit.\r\n\r\n\r\nStudents also enjoyed getting new books, and it helped to create an interest in the book at the beginning of the unit. There was enough for each table, and this helps the creation process go smoothly. When students do not have the amount of supples needed, it slows down the progress while students wait for the supples. Also, there is something about new products. Students will use older materials to get the job done; however, students love to break in the new items. Honestly, it was so nice to grab the posters in my classroom without having to take a trip to the store. Your generostiy has made my life easier.\r\n\r\nThe students used the materials to make posters for Halloween week. The Teacher Cadets are hosting Halloween activities for the month of October, and they created posters to advertise the different festivities such as the pumpkin and costume contest. Students will continue to use the materials for classroom projects within the curriculum as well as additional school activities. For example, students will plan activities for American Education Week in November. \r\n\r\nThank you again for your kindness and monetary donation. We have a device policy that requires students to use wired headphones, but most students only have wireless. Not that I have access to a class set of headphones, everyone can be apart of the learning experience. My students also love the color options as well as the padding of the ear pieces that make the set comfortable to wear. They have also been impressed with the sound quality. The headphones are very durable, and my class will get a lot of use for this for years to come. Thank you again. This helped to engage the students as we began the novel unit on To Kill a Mockingbird. They enjoyed the collaboration with other students, and the candy was a great incentive as they hunted for the clues around the school. The students enjoyed it so much that they asked to do it again! That is always a win with high school students.\r\n\r\nAs a teacher, it was so rewarding to see students enjoying their time in my class. It can sometimes be hard to enage students with the demands of the state standards along with the school schedule. Thank you for generously donating so that my students could have this enjoyable experience.","fullyFundedDate":1728935379785,"projectUrl":"project/trick-or-treat-give-me-something-good-t/8871804/","projectTitle":"Trick or Treat! While reading the novel, students have focused on characterization, conflict, and theme. Unfortunately, I am not able to read a lot of the novel with my students because we do not have enough class time, so I was able to provide a new novel for each student to take with them and read outside of class. Motivating students to read outside of class, is a challenge, but there are some students who enjoyed the story and fell in love with the characters such as Scout, Atticus, Jem and Dill.\r\n\r\nThis novel provides the opportunity to discuss perspective, prejudice, and racial discrimnation. The novel is written so well by Harper Lee, that I do not have to create much discussion about these things. Instead, the conversation among students happen naturally, and they can discuss how these things effect the characters in the novel, and then make connections with their own lives. Students wrote several journal entries that encouraged them to make connections while reading the novel. \r\n\r\nOne of the major grades that students created while reading the novel is a 2 pager. For this assignment, students illustrated and wrote down the big ideas of the novel. It was intereresting to see each students's interpretation of the main events, and there were some very insightful finished products.\r\n\r\nIn closing, my hope is that some of the students will remember the moral lessons taught in this novel, and it will give them a better understanding of the people and the world around them. This remembrance will beckon them to be compassionate and yet desire justice for everyone.","fullyFundedDate":1728001249533,"projectUrl":"project/its-all-about-perspective/8824658/","projectTitle":"It's All About Perspective","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Burdette","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7136449_orig.jpg?crop=1280,1280,x0,y34&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1727293134369","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7136449"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_25315","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":511,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":55,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":5,"percentWhite":78,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":12,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"UNCLASSIFIED","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":88.7,"schoolId":25315,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Brashier Middle College Charter High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Brashier Middle College Charter High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/south-carolina/south-carolina-department-of-education/brashier-middle-college-cs/25315"}
