We are the Intermediate Self Contained Nero Autism Class, servicing grades 2-5 . My students have done an amazing job of working on their social skills as well as academics.
The boys love math and are very competitive.
We use technology to practice skills and learn new material along with other manipulatives.
Reading is an outlet and calming activity for my all boys class. They are intrigued with graphic novels and can get lost in one at any time. It is wonderful to have to tell them to put their books away.
We connect our reading to math, science and social studies. The boys are learning that reading spans into every aspect of their lives and is an important skill to learn and take ownership of. As we develop community in our class you can find the boys reading texts to each other or helping a friend get through a tough piece of text, assignment or book they may have. Many have gone from being reluctant readers to emerging lifelong readers. Our motto is, "We are more than a class we are a family."
The Mood Emotions Book set will provide literature demonstrating how people deal with their emotions. In addition the Social Emotional Matching allows self correction as they identify situations and the social emotional response that is appropriate. The Social Emotional Writing Prompts extend their understanding and help them make a self to text and self to world connection. Students with social emotional weakness do not automatically understand how they should react to situations but are naturally driven by strong emotions. These items support the work that occurs in my class .
