My Project

Kailua High School students have struggled with the transition back to in-person learning since COVID-19. Anxiety, depression, and other mental and physical disabilities inhibit students from reaching their full potential. COVID-19 has exacerbated symptoms in many of the students we worth with in the counseling center. Many students struggle to attend their classes and emotional wellbeing has declined. With 54% of students at KHS receiving free or reduced-price lunch, students are in need of additional support.

The mental health coping tools, snacks, and flexible seating will help the KHS counseling center to become a safe space on campus where students can regulate, recharge, and learn social emotional skills.

Specifically, the fidget toy packs and kick bands will be used to assist with evidence-based, therapeutic treatment to students struggling with mental health concerns such as stress, anxiety, depression, and more. These tools can be used in classroom settings to promote learning. Snacks will be used by students to meet their basic daily needs if they have not gotten enough to eat that day. The floor table, rug, and zen garden tools will be used in our "Wave Room" in the counseling center where students can engage in sand play therapy. Sensory and physiological coping skills help students to regulate themselves as they communicate difficult thoughts and emotions. The goal of this project is to create a more accessible space in the counseling center for Kailua High School students to learn social emotional skills and improve their mental health.
