This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
3rd grade is where best friends are made, favorite teachers discovered and love for reading and writing fostered-All of which encompasses my class. My 3rd-grade scholars love to read and experience new things! Anxious to experience 3rd grade, they returned to school eager to learn, excel, and share their experiences with one another.
My students enjoy learning through literacy.
One of their favorite activities is the "Never-Ending Story" where they collaborate to write a narrative to share with their peers having only one minute to add their parts.
My Project
This project is an extension of our classroom reading nook. As we progress through the school year and focus heavily on the social-emotional wellness of students, it is becoming increasingly evident that students need constant reminders of how to deal with their emotions. The items in this project will assist students in processing their emotions with a selection of texts that allow students to reflect on processing emotions and how to interact with peers. Each of the books focuses on a key element of social-emotional learning and self-regulation. The texts encourage students to tell the truth, think about tattling and how what they say impacts others. "Harriet the Spy" is a great text for teaching students about honesty, friendship and the impact their actions have on others. Also included in the project are a few texts because students have demonstrated an interest in science. The text "I Was a Third Grade Science Project" introduces students to science from the point of view of a fellow third grader. Many of the texts encourage student accountability and promote self-awareness that sometimes is lacking at such a critical age. Pillows with positive affirmations constantly remind students to persevere and the carpet creates an intimate gathering space for students to discuss their emotions with one another, write personal reflections or meet with the teacher. These materials support the social-emotional and academic growth for our students not only in literacy but life.
