My Students

"The way we treat our children directly impacts what they believe about themselves." - Ariadne Brilt

I thoroughly enjoy being an elementary School Psychologist who teaches social-emotional learning curriculum (Gr.

K-5) in an urban school district to students who come from diverse backgrounds, some with few outside resources to meet their needs.

Beginning in kindergarten, I alongside our classroom teachers, teach social skills. We focus heavily on basic interaction skills, respect, self-control, empathy, problem-solving, relationship building, and self-awareness. We pride ourselves in delivering lessons that are engaging and tailored to meet their needs. These skills are essential and certainly not well-developed by the time our students enter kindergarten. In fact, many of our students have learning differences or have had a lack of structured, educational experiences and thus they require explicit social skills instruction.

My wish list of resources will add to my growing library and help my children make connections through literature. I plan on developing a list of my current classroom library and providing it to teachers so they have an idea of what literature resources are available and I hope to add these additional books if my project is fully funded!!

My Project

The need for early intervention specifically in the area of SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING (SEL) is vital to helping our students become successful classroom citizens and responsible members of the community. The resources that I am am seeking, coupled with research-based SEL curriculum introduce key vocabulary and concepts in an engaging and interactive format. I then develop lessons to accompany the books including extension activities that are hands-on and/or interactive using the SmartBoard.

By donating to my project, you will not only help to teach these essential social-emotional skills, you will also be supporting improved overall student achievement.

Self-regulation, the ability to monitor and manage emotions, thoughts, and behaviors, is an integral part of these literature books. Other key concepts reinforced include: Growth Mindset, Self-Esteem/Self-Confidence, Empathy, and Relationship Building - essential skills! The Bristol School District recognizes the strong need for SEL curriculum development! They have even tailored their report card "Behaviors for Success" standards to align with the 5 essential SEL skills areas identified nationally (Self-Awareness, Social Awareness, Self-Management, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision-Making). However, like many school districts, financial resources are limited and thus we are left to purchase many items ourselves.

I appreciate your consideration on supporting my project!
