My students need a new printer, school supplies, mindfulness activities and other activities to help them calm down and ready their brains for learning again.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are inner city, minority students, many of whom have witnessed or experienced severe trauma. As a result, their lack of coping skills or heightened anxiety may lead to difficult behaviors.
My students are kind, caring and unique, but they need a little more love and support to be successful in a school setting.
Many of my students come from challenging households, so it is important that they can come to school knowing that they can have a safe and comfortable place to go to if they need it.
I have chosen some materials that will benefit all of my students from our K4 rooms to the eighth graders. Our school has a social-emotional room that students are allowed to use to take a break and to cool down in, with their teacher's permission. They usually get five to ten minutes or so to take a break and then are brought back to their room. It is amazing to see how effective taking a cool down break can be for my students!
Our social emotional room is in need of some TLC in regards to supplies, mindfulness activities and activities for my students to use to calm their brains and take a short break.
My students really enjoy and benefit from using the social-emotional room (or "cool down room" as some call it). They will be escorted to the room by a teacher and will be allowed to take a break using what is in the room. The printer will be used for making print-outs of coloring sheets, mindfulness scripts and other materials. The board and card games are really helpful for students who can't calm down by being asked to take deep breaths. Having them focus on one task or playing a game can help the younger kiddos calm down more effectively. School supplies will also be used by the students to keep their coloring sheets, cool down sheets and other work organized, along with giving them tools to access these helpful worksheets. This room has been very successful this school year and we can't wait to see its successes again next year!
