This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students consist of 24 elementary school children during the school day and various fourth and fifth-grade students in my after-school programs. They always come to school with smiles on their faces and continue to make me laugh. They come from various backgrounds and some have limited opportunities due to financial means.
My students love to be at school, love to learn, have fun, and appreciate verbal praise as well as working toward earning rewards in the classroom.
In addition, they love to do one thing the most, free write.
My Project
This project contains various picture books that are suggested within our fourth grade Social Emotional Curriculum. Reading these books aloud together with the class will help students understand and reinforce various social emotional concepts such as teaching gratitude, acceptance, making mindful and unmindful decisions, and understanding how the brain works. These lessons are so important for students at this grade level who are transitioning from children to young adults. This can be a very difficult age for these children, and in the past I have found that teaching these social emotional lessons helps students in many ways. I would love to expand this curriculum with the addition of these books which will also help foster class discussions.
