My Students

I am an Special Education teacher in a low-income, high poverty school district. My elementarty school students are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom. These challenges are both academic and social-emotional.

Despite these challenges, my students have a love for learning and give their best effort every day.

Our vibrant school community embraces diversity in every form. We celebrate the inclusion of all students in our programs and classrooms.

My students not only work hard on building their academic skills but also on their social skills. They practice their new skills throughout the school and are so proud of themselves when they succeed!

My Project

This year, my school as a whole is trying to increase our social-emotional development. We want to build a school community where its members connect with one another, care for one another and lifetime lessons are learned. Part of this learning involves social-emotional curricula that we have adapted in our school and our classrooms.

The Zones of Regulation is a well-known, evidence-based curriculum that we can use as a tool to help students learn to self-regulate and expand their growth in learning about themselves and others.

We are opperating from a growth mindset, restorative practices framework, and self-regulation is a vital piece of that social-emotional puzzle.

In addition to the curriculum I would need posters, colored paper, bookmaking supplies, and velcro. Students make mini books to help express their feelings and create "Zones" within their classrooms to help calm them when they are getting upset.
