Social Emotional Learning With Picture Books

My Students

My students are awesome! I teach at a Philadelphia public school that qualifies for Title I funding. My entire class qualifies for free breakfast and lunch. Most of my students live in a single-parent household and some of them are being cared for by a foster family or extended family members.

Despite the challenges my students face, they come each day with a great attitude.

Many of them have faced hardships that you would never want any child to ever experience. I provide a safe, nurturing environment where kids can learn and progress.

My Project

My students and I love to begin our day with a community meeting. This allows us to check in with one another and sets a positive tone for the day. Sometimes we have found that a learner is feeling down or is upset and not sure how to recover from those emotions. The picture books in this project will provide resources, tools, and tips for coping with sadness, anger, and other feelings. These books will be a great way to allow students to discuss emotions based on a reading and help them to process how they may feel at times. With social-emotional learning tips introduced and reinforced throughout our day, scholars will learn that things may be difficult at times but there are things we can do, say, and share that can help ourselves and others feel better and be better!
