Social Emotional Learning with Diverse Characters
Help me give my students library books with diverse characters that teach social emotional learning!
My Students
My students come from very diverse backgrounds. Many of them have experienced challenges we adults could not imagine. Our diverse classrooms bring many different cultures and languages. School is a safe and engaging place for all students with different backgrounds to come together to play, build relationships, experience, learn and grow safely. My readers come to school eager and ready to engage in their day. We work hard to meet the needs of each of these students both academically and socially.
My Project
At an increasing rate, students are entering the classroom without necessary social, emotional skills to succeed in school and manage their emotions. Book publishers are recognizing this trend and have created amazing picture books to help students learn how to manage the big emotions they are feeling.
Through this project you will provide a variety of books that will help my students manage their emotions by recognizing those emotions in book characters.
I will be able to conduct engaging read alouds in library class that engage my students in dialogue about how to best manage their emotions at school and at home. Students will then be able to check out these library books to continue their learning.
These books provide students with a safe place to learn about characters while applying skills to their own lives. It is my hope that, after reading these picture books, my students will not feel alone and understand that other kids feel big emotions and learn how to manage them.
Most excitingly, the characters in the books of this project come from a variety of backgrounds, so all my students will feel represented by the characters in this project!
